Week Twenty-Two: Thursday

So I changed the schedule and now I can’t adhere to it. Typical.

I had to babysit on Thursday so I was unable to run. On Friday when I told co-workers this, they pointed out that I was not “babysitting” and rather parenting. That is still taking some getting used to. If I was babysitting, however, and have been doing it 24 hours a day for 10 weeks, that would be like $8,400 at $5 an hour.

Is $5 an hour too cheap? What do baby sitters make these days?

I guess I better figure that out before I get ripped off.

The New Challenge:

I ran a marathon. Let's kick it up a notch.

I am signed up and paid for the NewBriTri, a sprint triathlon (.5 mile swim/14 mile bike/3 mile run) taking place on June 6th, 2009.

Oh, but that is not all.

I am signed up for the Chicago Marathon taking place Oct. 11th, 2009. Now that I have finished one in less than 5 hours, I am shooting for a 4 hour finish.

Current weight as of 3/2/2009 - 206lbs. Still only overweight and no longer obese, but a little disappointed that I put on about 6 lbs since the marathon. In order to bring my BMI to Normal range, I need to weigh 183 lbs. That means that in the process I hope to lose 23 lbs. (If you are double checking my numbers, I am calculating my height at 6 feet tall as opposed to 5'11.5" after a doctor's visit that confirmed my 6 foot status.)

The Motivation:

I have a child on the way. We do not know the sex of the child, but one motivation is that if my child is a boy, I want to be able to scream at him “You think you can take your old man?” and not be met with the response “You’ll never catch me, fatso!”. If it is a girl, I want to make sure that any boy that comes over to pick her up for a date will be threatened when I whisper to him “You lay a hand on her and I will sneak into your room at night and kill you.” And not have him just think “I’ll hear you coming, fatso.”

I have told most of my co-workers about this plan. If I end up giving up on this then I will look like a failure to not only myself, but everyone else around here. They are a supportive bunch, so I will be ashamed if I come in and say that I didn’t run and have them mock and ridicule me.

This blog. Even though no one will read it, its existence is a documentation of the process and therefore if I do not fulfill the title of the blog, I have lied on the internet. And I don’t want to be the first person to lie about something on the internet.

The pleasant side effect of this is that I will shed some of this extra weight. I need to lose 60 pounds in order to be considered of “normal” weight. Yes, that is the exact highest weight for me to be considered in the “normal” weight range. It is 60 pounds for God’s sake, lay off me.

I just think it would be really kick-ass to run a marathon.

So I am going to set out to do what thousands upon thousands of people have done before.

This fat guy is going to run a marathon.
